WORKWEAR #3. | Interior Stylist + Painter Nina Lilli Holden

WORKWEAR is our monthly feature in which we explore the traditions and symbolism of clothing and footwear worn in practical environments through conversations with local artists, craftspeople and designers.

This month Interior Stylist + Painter Nina Lilli Holden shares the story of her craft and what workwear means to her. She wears our brand new Kohud Mini Heel Klassisk - this playful style will feature in our AW collection, which is set to release at the end of this month!

Tell us a bit about your craft: how it’s evolved over the years and what it means to you to be a maker?

I started working in Interior Styling 8 years ago; I worked at Design studio, House of Grey, as a Styling assistant before going freelance, supporting other stylists alongside working with my own clients before fully taking the plunge with my own business in 2022.

I am often asked the difference between an Interior Designer and Stylist, my answer is that I work on the the final stage of creation, whether that be helping a residential client with final touches and decisions to a renovation or creating the imagery for a fabric designer to showcase their designs. Over the years I have developed a strong personal style that I have become known for; creating serene spaces. I started painting during the first lockdown, my industry shut down and I had no output for my creativity.  Along with my Interiors work, I find inspiration in nature and its raw textures and earthy colours. I see painting and creating interiors in much the same way, it is all about working with space, colour and creating a feeling of harmony.  I feel forever lucky to have a chosen a career that feeds my love of being creative. No two days are every the same, with new and evolving projects to look forward to constantly.

What does "workwear" mean to you?

Workwear to me, means combining both comfort and style. When I am out on a photoshoot, site visit or just pottering around my home studio, I need to feel comfortable, I am often on my feet all day, but as I am also client facing, I have to look presentable. I was once told that my clothes were the front cover of my portfolio and this has always come to mind when dressing for work.

What do you wear to studio every day? Do you have a beloved and battered work uniform or do you like to dress up differently to make your artwork?

I have ruined many of my favourite clothes when feeling inspired to paint and not preparing properly, so now I throw on some overalls or at the very least an apron as protection. I like to work in soft, natural, breathable fabrics that allow me to move without restriction. Comfort and practicality are always my first priority closely followed by style.
